23 - Heavens' Outcasts

Previous session: 22 - Dome & Devil

Farewells and exile
...

After a long self-reflecting night, when we wake up, we notice that many of the villagers are out and tasked to investigate the fire damage. We notice Lady Lutrina and Sir Tonq standing outside, with representatives of the other villages (minus the Capybaras).

Lady Lutrina
Thank you for saving the dome.

All of them bow at the same time.

Lady Lutrina
We have some gifts for you.

Duck representative: On behalf of the Duck Duchy tribe, please accept this earring:

Beaver: On behalf of Longtooth the Eldest and the beaver tribe, please accept this trinket:

Cat: From Lady Felisia and the cat tribe, accept this:

Sir Tonq approaches Reylynn.

Sir Tonq
Milady, I cherish the time we had together. Sadly, I can't see you again.

He turns around dramatically, even if Reylynn said or did nothing.

Sir Tonq
Please, don't make it harder. Take this pendant to remind you of me.

He curls his fingers around Reylynn to attach the pendant and gives her a kiss on the cheek. Reylynn smiles and thanks him.

Lady Lutrina
I name you Saviors of the dome. Hear ye!

The villagers cheer and clap.

Lady Lutrina
And now, you must leave and never return again.
Persy
Thank you, and it goes also for you, you shouldn't get outside.
Lady Lutrina
We're going to seal the dome.
Persy
I see you have a plan.

On these words, we bid our farewells, and we head towards our original entry point.
When we get back to the grate, the river is still flowing which is making it easier to exit. However, the debris are completely blocking the grate, leaving only the water to flow outside. As we can't get out that way, we're trying The Platypus's lair exit.
We're reaching the lair, and fortunately, the exit tunnel is still there, and we're taking it in the following order:
Willum - Persy - Balnorin - Nesvalyn - Reylynn
This tube is going to different directions instead of being forward and lasts a long time. After a while, we're all propelled into the void, and starts to fall.
[Acrobatics] Balnorin and Willum takes 3 fall dmg.
Persy gets down gracefully with the Pirate Hookshot.
Willum yells about not being a landing mat and complains about his discomfort.
[Perception - Pass ✔] We notice on the other side of the crevasse, a large cavern opening up, but also being much colder than the surroundings.
[Nature - Pass ✔] Persy notices it's a mountain cavern. The cold temperature is throwing him a bit, as these temperatures should be much when getting inside the mountains.

Persy
I think we're on the other side of the mountain where the dome was.
Willum
What if the dragon was here?
Persy
I was thinking that, it shouldn't be that cold.

With the idea of the potential thread, we're splitting the items we received between ourselves.
We're attuning to them and we're swapping to the winter gear once again. As we're all ready, we head to the cavern, as it's the only way to progress.

The Icy Cavern
...

[Perception - Pass ✔] In the center of the cavern, it's filled with shiny objects, and a continuous layer of ice, making it difficult to move around.
Balnorin feels something drip on his shoulder, and looks at the source. He sees a dragon dripping up and opening their maw.
[CON Save] The group takes 40 cold dmg.

Revenge against the White Dragon

[Round 1]
The dragon roars an aura of fear...
↪[WIS Save] Balnorin is frightened.
... and flies down and puts himself between the gold and us.
Nesvalyn tries to talk his way through in Draconic.
↪[Persuasion - Pass ✔] The dragon takes more a curious pose and wants to hear more. (Combat is temporarily suspended)

White Dragon
Interesting, the food can speak our tongue. What the food sent is doing here?
Nesvalyn
We're just passing by, we're not looking for troubles.
White Dragon
From the Platypus way?
Nesvalyn
Yes, but it was the Platypus way. What's your deal with them?
White Dragon
It was a partnership, they would send me food and I would take care of some matters, especially for some people. Is he still alive?

[Insight - Pass ✔] That dragon being older than Nesvalyn, it's hard to read. However he doesn't seem aggressive at the party, more curious.
From that, Nesvalyn explains the story about The Platypus. Upon the story the dragon let out a laugh.

White Dragon
Thanks the stone giants, I'll pack up and go North. It's a bit too warm here.

The dragon goes back, and sits down near his treasure, and we hear clicking noises. Two white wyrmling pop out, and all of three of them put the treasure into their pouches.

Willum
So, what's happening?
Persy
Yeah Nesvalyn, the heck just happened?
Nesvalyn
Oh right, remind me when I'm speaking in Draconic, as it's more an habit. Anyways, I explained that we just wanted to pass by, I quickly explained the situation, and he had a deal with the Platypus, and because, well, they're dead, the dragon is packing up and leaving to head further in the North.
Persy
But... I'm supposed to be the first Dragonslayer Nesvalyn! What about my dreams?
White Dragon
You know that I understand Common too? Get out of my lair before I change my mind.

We quickly cross the cavern to reach the other side.

Once we manage to get out, we notice it's already dark.
[Survival - Pass ✔] We're on the western side of the mountain (The Dome is on the eastern side).
Willum's intuition points to the North / North West.

Persy
Can we talk about what happened back there?
Nesvalyn
As I said, that Dragon and the Platypus had an agreement, which means if he proposed us to leave through here...
Willum
That son of a bitch.
Persy
But the Dragon! He was chromatic so he must have been evil right?
Nesvalyn
I'm not sure where you're pulling that idea, as it's the first Dragon I've met or heard in centuries as they're supposed to be extinct. Also I'd like to remind that you're talking about my "deities" with that.
Persy
I... I'm sorry Nesvalyn if I offended you with that.
Nesvalyn
No harms done, but if we encounter a dragon we can't talk with or they're evil, I'll point you towards them ok?
The next morning...

We're waking up, and we see snow fields around us that never ends. For the direction, we're heading to the Alderakh, a massive place, even from our position. We estimate being a week away if we stay on course.

Heading to the Alderakh
...

It's been two days since we've been travelling from the caverns.
[Perception - Pass ✔] Reylynn and Willum smell a campfire smoke on our way while dusk is falling.
Willum mentions the smell, and suggests we approach sneakily.
[Stealth] Nesvalyn and Reylynn are really well hidden, Balnorin is stealthy, Persy and Willum aren't quite stealthy.
When getting closer, we hear lively noises, along the smell of food being cooked. We notice a woman with a cooking set, along the camp a bit further.
Persy snaps a twig, making that woman reacting with "Who's there?"
Persy and Willum reveal themselves.

Persy
We're just pass-byers.

Nesvalyn and Reylynn also reveal themselves (leaving only Balnorin hidden).
She pulls a knife towards us.

Nesvalyn
Let's talk a bit if you don't mind? If after discussing you still don't want us, it will be fine, and we will be on our way.

[Persuasion - Pass ✔] She lowers her knife.

Nesvalyn
We're travelling around, and as dusk falls, we're looking to settle our camp, and perhaps merging our camps, as safety in number you know?
Persy
Are you alone here?
???
Not really, I sent someone to get more logs for the fire. I'm Hilda, I'm the camp's cook, and I'll introduce you to the Mother.
Persy
The Mother?
Hilda
Mother Arlene is our leader. She's the one who checking the Pilgrimage.

[Religion - Pass ✔] Balnorin and Persy recognizes the symbol of pendant around her next, being the symbol of the wonder of Heavens (Related to Cosmetology, the Domain of Beauty, Wisdom, Ascension and Cosmic Design).

Willum
Have you seen a half-orc or a tiger person?
Hilda
I don't think so.
Nesvalyn
What is this pilgrimage? If you don't mind expaining it to us.
Hilda
You'd better to ask the Mother, I'm merely just the cook.
Nesvalyn
Don't denigrate yourself, you're doing great, as we all have our strengths and weaknesses.
Persy
For my side, I don't know when to shut up.
Willum
Same here.
Nesvalyn
On these wonderful sharing, do you mind presenting us to the Mother?

The scout mentioned by Hilda gets back with the logs, and we're brought to the main camp to met Mother Hilda.

The pilgrimage camp
...

On our way, we notice that this camp counts around 25 pilgrims, along a few children and teenagers. Everybody seems to be Wunderran. We arrive at a bonfire, where 12 pilgrims are sit around. Hilda leads us to a middle-aged woman.

Mother Arlene
How are you doing?

She presents her hand, where we all shake her hand, except Balnorin. We can notice a wrinkled and sun damaged face.

Mother Arlene
Welcome to the camp. I'm Mother Arlene, what are you doing around here?
Nesvalyn
We're looking to merge camps.
Persy
And also there's some curiosity about your pilgrimage in a place like this.
Willum
How it is?
Mother Arlene
Welp. If you're here for a night for warmth, hot meal and stories, I'm the right woman!

We're being settled closer to the fire for the conversation.

Mother Arlene
Diner is going to be served in about one hour. You ask me questions, I ask you questions.
Nesvalyn
Fair.
Willum
Have you seen an half-orc or a tiger-looking person?
Mother Arlene
I'm afraid we haven't seen anyone for a long time, especially that tiger looking dancer. She was really good. What are you doing here?
Nesvalyn
We're looking for someone as you may have guessed.
Persy
Also we've met here for different reasons. We aim to go to Alderahk.
Nesvalyn
Is this place related to the Pilgrimage?
Persy
I guess it would get you closer to the heavens?

She kisses her pendant.

Mother Arlene
We want to get into the highest point in Wundera to give our worship.
Persy
How you've been doing so far?
Mother Arlene
How did you stay safe?
Persy
By fighting.
Mother Arlene
Same answer for us. We had a rough patch, but it's been smooth for a while.
Nesvalyn
What's this Wonder of Heavens?
Mother Arlene
She's above us, among the stars and other places. It's also foretold that it will bring the end of the times.

Nesvalyn laughs nervously.

Nesvalyn
I was wondering with the Wyrd, what were your reactions about this event? And the relation with the Wyrdlings?
Mother Arlene
We see it at the temple, that we may grow and learn from each other.

Nesvalyn looks at Persy on this wisdom note, who's taking a bit of pride from this.

Persy
You said you've been fighting, who's the toughest here?
Mother Arlene
No one is really tough here. I also have a gun.
Persy
Finally someone who knows about firearms.

She whistles and an acolyte brings a Magitech anti rifle.

Nesvalyn
What... is this?
Persy
A firearm.
Willum
Hey, but I have this since the beginning!

He pulls out the Boon Stick, and all the weapons are drawn to him.

Willum
Let's calm down. It's just to heal, look.

He then shoots at Persy

Persy
First, hey! But thanks. Secondly, may I check it?
Mother Arlene
Sure you can.

She pulls out the ammo and hands it to Persy, and everybody calms down as Willum stows his "firearm".
[Investigation] Persy knows it's a pretty standard Dwarven gun. This one is a single shot rifle, no accessories or upgrades. They're likely from somewhere where this gun is from.

Persy
Ahh, it's making me homesick, it's a really nice craftmanship.

He gives the firearm back.

Mother Arlene
Thank you, it's been pretty useful. Well, it's getting late, feel free to settle where you can, and eat.

A bit later that night...
Willum gathers the party, and only us as he had something to share about Ludwig.

Willum
Dear friends, so you've been hearing that I ask also for a tiger person.
Persy
Is it related to the scrying session?
Willum
Not exactly, to said the truth, I've said that Ludwig was a half-beast, but actually, he is a Rakshasa.

[Horizon Walker] Reylynn recalls precisely what it is, a devil humanoid tiger with their hands reversed, and a powerful shapeshifter.

Persy
Why worried so much about him? Sounds like he can take care about himself.
Willum
He's my son and I'm his father.
Nesvalyn
Perhaps he wanted some emancipation?
Willum
I don't see why. He could've told me, I would've helped him or gave him advices.

[Perception - Pass ✔] Nesvalyn hears a woman wailing from outside the camp from the tree line.
[Insight - Fail ❌] Nesvalyn doesn't recognize it, but it feels deeply disturbing.

Nesvalyn
We're not alone around here.
Persy
What do you mean?
Nesvalyn
Can't you hear that woman wailing from the tree line?

Once mentioned, the rest of the group hear the cries.

Persy
What should we do?
Nesvalyn
I'll go warn Mother Arlene, let's prepare for the worse.

More and more voices are raising by the time Nesvalyn leaves.

Nesvalyn gets to Mother Arlene's tent, and convinces easily the guard to speak with and get into her tent. Once inside, she's without her equipment nor holy symbols.

Mother Arlene
What are you doing here that late?
Nesvalyn
Potential troubles.
Mother Arlene
What do you mean?
Nesvalyn
I just heard a woman wailing outside the camp.
Mother Arlene
No, you didn't heard that.

[Insight - Pass ✔] She doesn't want us to interfere.

Nesvalyn
I can forget that, depending if you want to help us or not.
Mother Arlene
These things here, among other things can exist only if you pay attention to them. So when you hear things in the woods, you haven't seen nor heard anything.

On the group's side during that time, more and more voices raise, then they all disappear and the rustling stops. The group seems confused.

Persy
Reylynn, any idea?
Reylynn
Not with paranormal, as I'm more used to extraplanar content.
Persy
Isn't it the same?
Reylynn
Not really.

[Divine Sense] Undead are sensed for a brief moment, then they disappear.

Nesvalyn
So basically, the more we give them thoughts, the more they exist?
Mother Arlene
Exactly, so if you may.
Nesvalyn
Very well, thank you for listening for my worries, it was after all, just some non sense ideas.
Mother Arlene
Have a good evening Nesvalyn.

Nesvalyn gets back to group, a bit perplex.

Persy
What happened? And what was that?
Nesvalyn
Nothing apparently. Let's forget that.
Willum
What do you mean forget that? There was things there!
Nesvalyn
According to Mother Arlene, some entities exist and get power if you give attention to them. So the idea is that we ignore them.
Persy
How I'm supposed to? I'm not sleeping and I dislike the idea of spending the night with voices.
Willum
Same on my side, as I meditate.
Nesvalyn
I... I don't know. Persy, perhaps you could take that time to craft more Hookshots as it seems to have been useful so far. And for Willum... Actually, I have something in mind, as it's something not complete but...

Nesvalyn pulls out a journal similar to his and hands it to Persy. He opens it and finds a folded note.

Persy
What is that?
Nesvalyn
A copy of my notes. I tend to write some of my thoughts along what we've lived so far. Let's say it's a way to keep watch on my mental state, as with what The Platypus said, going deranged is a sign.

Persy starts to read the journal, and the group tries to sleep, ignoring the cries.

The next morning...

Travelling with the Pilgrims
...

We still hear a faint wailing sound when waking up and during the day, as it's a bit unnerving energy. We've been travelling like that for a few days.
[Detect Portals] Reylynn detects no portal around us.
Persy has really a hard time dealing with these wailing sounds, as it seems to haunt the caravan, and goes to confront Mother Arlene.

Mother Arlene
Well, hello automaton.
Persy
Call me Persy please.
Mother Arlene
Sure Persy.
Persy
I was wondering about, you know, you're right but I don't sleep at night. I'm surprised they're still around, do you know what they're connected to?
Mother Arlene
I have no idea what you're talking about.
Persy
We can't even talk about it during daytime?
Mother Arlene
I haven't heard any voices.

[Insight - Pass ✔] She's hiding something, especially about hearing things.

Persy
Well, I didn't said they were voices.
Mother Arlene
Well there's nothing.
Balnorin
So, for how long did you had your dead problem?
Mother Arlene
I don't know what you mean. We're not associated with anything.
Balnorin
Well you may not been associated with them, but they may be with you.

Balnorin shows his holy symbol, revealing to her he's a follower of the Wonder of Death.
[Persuasion - Pass ✔] She pauses for a moment to consider this.

Mother Arlene
Fine. We'll have to feed the horses in one hour, we'll talk about that in private there.

We set up the horses after the hour, and as promised, we have this talk with Mother Arlene.

Mother Arlene
Look, I can explain. As I mentioned, we ran into some troubles into the mountains. Unfortunately, we lost most of our flocks there. It's possible that their souls are still roaming the earth.
Willum
It's something that you should've told us.
Nesvalyn
Not necessarily.
Mother Arlene
Exactly.
Willum
But we're involved now.
Mother Arlene
They're just ghosts, they can't do stuff to you if you ignore them.

[Cleric of Death] Balnorin knows it's false.

Balnorin
Just to be frank m'am, that's a big fat ass lie.
Mother Arlene
Don't you have a crypt to sweep?
Persy
Everybody calm down, I understand why you want to ignore the problem, but I don't sleep and it's scary as hell. It's not as powerless as you think by ignoring it.
Willum
And ignoring it don't solves the issue.
Mother Arlene
That's why we're getting over there.
Balnorin
How many have you lost?
Mother Arlene
8. A tragedy, really.
Willum
You're just using a god as an excuse to not handle it.
Persy
But can't we handle it? I mean, we fought ghosts before.
Nesvalyn
It was a different case, as we disturbed their sleep. Here they seem to roam as they're restless.

We hear a ghostly voice requiring help from the woods

Willum
I'm swearing on your god, if someone dies, you'll have a problem.
Mother Arlene
I will smite your ass young boy, don't you dare.

And they keep insulting each other for a while, even if some of us trying to calm down the fight until they split.
We resume the travel until we reach the border of a lake. We're near dusk time. Some pilgrims test the ice, and conclude it's solid enough to hold the caravans. They suggest to rest tonight and go tomorrow.

Mother Arlene
We cross now. They won't follow us after the lake.

Balnorin notices that the voices are getting louder.
Nesvalyn looks at Balnorin, waiting to see his reaction about this.

Balnorin
There's only one way to find out. Let's do as she says.

We all start to cross the frozen lake. As we're advancing safely, the sun starts to set. The shadow of the Alderakh expands over us. Behind us, we're hearing the wailing voices again as they seem to intensify.

Nesvalyn
Should we turn to check?
Balnorin
Only if you ain't a bitch.

Upon checking, we see 8 black figures, calling and begging for help.
They're moving towards the caravan, faster and faster.

Mother Arlene
Faster!

She takes the lead of the caravan and wipe the leash to advance faster.
As the figures are closer, they don't look like ghosts. They're solid shapes, running on all fours, and their faces are blank shadows. The voice calling from help is ear shattering. They look like humans, except they're behaving like animals.
[Religion - Fail ❌] Balnorin has no idea what it is.
[Religion - Pass ✔] Persy has read something in the Logarium Undead Encyclopedia. He thinks we're getting attacked by a pack of Skin Walkers.

Skin walkers combat

[Round 1]
The pack gets closer and morphs into a weird werewolf shape. 4 for them leaps to the group and 4 others go after the caravan.

  • One goes to Willum (all miss)
  • One goes to Persy (all miss)
  • One goes to Balnorin (hits twice for 22 dmg)
  • One goes to Nesvalyn (hits once for 5 dmg)
  • ↪[STR Save - Pass ✔] Nesvalyn stays on his feet

We hear the screaming from outside.

Reylynn casts [Protection from Evil and Good] on Nesvalyn.
Nesvalyn attacks the Skin Walker in front of him (hits once for 22 psy dmg).
Willum rages then attacks the one in front of him (crits for 75 dmg 💀) then attacks the one next to Nesvalyn (hits for 26 dmg).
Persy attacks the one in front of him (hits once for 11 dmg) then Ozzy tries to attack it (miss), and he runs towards the caravan.
Balnorin casts [Spirit Guardians] (deals 13 radiant dmg to three enemies - one dead 💀) and uses the Longtooth’s Trinket.

[Round 2]
Skin walkers' turn:
↪Spirit Guardians deals 13 dmg to the ones close to the party

  • One attacks Balnorin (hits once for 12 6 dmg)
  • ↪[CON Save - Pass ✔] Balnorin keeps the concentration.
  • The other one tries to attack Balnorin (miss)
  • The ice cracks as a Skin walker jumps in front of the caravan, doing a chain reaction shattering the ice all around.
  • ↪[DEX Save - Fail ❌] Persy holds on the edge of the ice sheet while being in the frigid water.

Reylynn throws darts at the Skin Walker near Balnorin (hits for 29 dmg, ricochets for 14 dmg, then crits! for 25 dmg, ricochets for 12 dmg).
Nesvalyn attacks one next to Balnorin (hits for 22 dmg 💀) and tries to attack the other one (miss).
Willum attacks the last one in our group (hits for 27 dmg 💀) then gets closer to the broken ice.
Persy resists the cold water ([CON Save - Pass ✔]), then casts [Misty Step] to get out of the water safely.

When turning back, Persy notices the blue lights from the Skin Walkers, and we hear Mother Arlene screaming from help.
Balnorin uses [Control Water] to eject the caravan out of the water. The pilgrims are cold, screaming, but safe at least. Mother Arlene lays down. When Persy tries to [Cure Wounds], she stops him.

Mother Arlene
Tell them I'm sorry

She puts her hand on Persy's forehead, and he has a vision from her:

Eight pilgrims are tied to a tree stomp, then Mother Arlene stabs in their forehead.
The vision shifts to her leading to the caravan.

Mother Arlene
Tell them...

As she expires her last breath. Persy shakes his head.

Persy
If you've stayed alive, you could've atone for it.

The acolytes get back to the shore, and we're following to reach the shore, resting for the night.
